Brewing Up Coffee Magick

Over my many years of practicing magick and working witchcraft, I’ve gravitated towards one particular type of magick, that I perform daily—and usually multiple times throughout the day at that.

Coffee magick.

My mornings also routinely include breathing exercises, walking meditations, a tarot card pull to get a reading on the day’s energy, and gratitude prayers, but my coffee magick ritual happens most often. I have three to four cups of coffee almost every day, and each cup is—if not a full ritual—a magickal working.

This morning coffee ritual is crucial for me. I don’t like waking up. I don’t know anyone who does, honestly, but one of my nicknames through childhood was Sleeping Beauty. Needless to say, once I fall asleep, staying asleep is my preferred state, even 10 or more hours later. I need this ritual to come fully awake and focus for the day.

Interestingly, it’s not necessarily that the caffeine waking me up or is even a necessary component to the process. There was a time when I replaced coffee with herbal tea. The ritual is different, though, and works even in the absence of caffeine.

Listening to the morning pot percolate, providing a gentle background harmony, I do my morning stretches, a few easy yoga poses, and a “greet the dawn” breathing exercise. The spreading aroma of coffee dispels the last of the sleep fogging my thoughts and any lingering nighttime attachments.

I pour the creamer in first with my right hand (which is my receptive hand) to help me receive the qualities of whichever flavor I’ve chosen that day—from plain creamer to chocolate, to Irish-creme flavored coffee. With my left hand (which is projective) I pour the coffee. I set my intentions and project my will into the coffee, deciding which qualities I will be consuming from my morning brew. It changes depending on what I feel I need on any particular day.

My afternoon coffee magick working helps me foster the space to take a break—to relax for a minute or five and get away from the screen. That cup is all about clarifying and focusing as well as stopping myself from overthinking everything.

Meanwhile, an occasional evening cup of coffee can provide a magick touch to the night that helps me wind down and relax. This final cup only usually happens if I’m socializing after dinner, whether in person, over video chat, or (rarely) over a phone call. It’s a relaxing and yet fortifying brew.

As I stated above, the magickal properties I get from my coffee magick change daily—which works well since coffee has so many magical uses! Below, I’ve compiled a list of all the ways I enjoy using coffee magick in my daily brews.
